Empower Technologies to Introduce Dual-Core Based Industrial Handhelds for High-End Signal Processing Applications

Added 2/18/2008 12:00:00 AM

Having just introduced their own LEOs (Empowers’s Linux Embedded Operating System) based Development Kit for Texas Instrument’s new DaVinci dual-core processors, a company spokesperson said they are now in process of introducing a handheld reference design based on the SBC contained in the Development Kit. This SBC with 4.3" touch screen display mounted to it and complete with their LEOs will have an industrial hardened case and will be offered to OEM’s as an application platform, just as the SBC’s will be sold to OEM’s.

The TI DM644x series processors have both an ARM9 and TI DSP core and are optimized for video signal processing, but are also ideal for any signal analytical application. Developers now for the first time have a relatively inexpensive way to do applications involving not just data collection, but sophisticated signal acquisition and analysis in both time and frequency domain (ie FFT), for example. Depending upon inputs, this opens up possible uses in the biophysical diagnostic arena (medical tricorder, anyone?), or, for that matter, any application where measurement and data/signal analysis would be required- all in a handheld instrument no larger than a PDA, and, in fact, still having PDA functionality including all the typical goodies including calendar functions, WiFi, Bluetooth, etc.

The first iteration of this device is appearing as a Personal Navigation Device, though based on a single-core Samsung 2440 media processor. Empower says that it should be available shortly to end-users through retail and/or OEM channels.

Hertzler Systems GainSeeker Suite expands support for PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) devices

Added 11/7/2007 12:00:00 AM

Hertzler Systems today announced the latest release the GainSeeker® Suite, the company’s flagship software for Statistical Process Control. The new version provides expanded support for Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) Devices.

Byron Shetler, Hertzler’s Chief Technology Officer, described the move: "Last year we began supporting PDA devices using Citrix and Terminal Services.  Terminal Services allows users to update their GainSeeker database live using wireless technology.  That live connection, which also means they can see real-time control charts on their PDA, is a huge benefit.  But the downside is that you must have wireless technology and experience with Terminal Services or Citrix.  We had some customers that were willing to give up the live connection to the database in exchange for the portability of the PDA."
